Humble Bundle Impacts Literacy in Ghanaian Schools

Late in 2013, Humble Bundle came to us with some exciting news. They were set to sell a bundle of e-books and we were one of the benefitting charities. We were extremely flattered, but didn’t yet know exactly what to expect, partly because what they are doing is just so innovative.

Humble Bundle assembles bundles of digital content and then lets users pay what they want for them. Users are allowed to allocate a specific amount of their payment to whichever charity is attached to the Bundle, which raises significant funds for different causes across the globe.

In a world of set prices where the assumption is that if people can pay less for things they will, Humble Bundle operates on the opposite assumption: that if you treat people with respect, they will be generous.

And, as it turns out: they’re right!

Fast forward to July 2014. Thanks to e-book and audiobook bundles, Humble Bundle and its customers raised $95,000 for our cause. We were floored by the generosity and support.

The funds ensured that Worldreader could complete a number of important projects this summer, including our Vacation Reading School in Ghana (VRS). The program gives Worldreader students at Adeiso and Kade primary, junior high, and senior high schools in Ghana access to their e-readers during school vacation. VRS includes library periods, out-of-classroom experience for primary schools, creative writing workshops, guest speakers on careers and a Worldreader Mobile workshop. Over 500 children are served during the month of August thanks to our staff and visiting volunteers.
